The Rockland Waterfront, and exhibit of 7 artists
On Friday, July 5, from 5:30 to 8:00, the Jonathan Frost Gallery in Rockland will host the opening reception for “The Rockland Waterfront,” an exhibition by seven artists who have spent time looking at and recording the activities, boats, buildings, and moods of Rockland’s waterfront. They are photographers Tillman Crane, Charles J. Dukes, Ellen Slotnick, and John Snyder, and painters Bob Besaw, Jonathan Frost, and Douglas Smith.
Steve Lindsay will play jazz piano at the opening.
Tillman Crane’s black-and-white photographs capture the daily work being done at Rockland’s Maine State Ferry Service, both on the ferries and on the wharf.
Charles J. Dukes, working mostly in black and white, focuses on the scraping and refurbishing of the schooner “Victory Chimes” at Rockland Marine. His only color piece in the show, “Winter’s Rest,” is of drydocked sailboats and lobster boats placidly enduring a snowstorm.
Ellen Slotnick roamed the waterfront at night, capturing both a mood and individual compositions that would be impossible to get in daylight.
John Snyder’s photographs include shots of aspiring boatbuilders at the Apprenticeshop, a ship’s pilot heading to port, and boatyard workers at work and rest.
Bob Besaw has been hanging around the waterfront for years, painting whatever strikes his fancy. His pieces include boatyard scenes, the view from inside a large pleasure craft, and a night view of the Pearl restaurant and surrounding harbor.
Jonathan Frost offers an acrylic painting of a crane and workers at Journey’s End Marina lowering floats into the water.
Douglas Smith is showing five oil paintings of Lermond Cove, with a view of the seaweed processing plant and its signature smokestack, at different times of the year and in different light.
The show will be up through July 29. The Jonathan Frost Gallery is located at the corner of Main Street and Park Drive, and is open from 10:00 to 5:00, Tuesday through Saturday. The telephone number is (207)596-0800.
