Friday, July 3, the Jonathan Frost Gallery presents a new show featuring eight pastels by Barbara Vanderbilt, from her “Language of Stone” series. Some pieces depict the Maine coast; others evoke towering Western rock formations. These pieces offer a preview of a larger showing of her work, to be held next summer.
Artist Statement:
The beauty of the trees and rock formations on the coast of Maine is something that I can never get enough of. I love their shapes and textures and the stories they tell. I try to convey the interplay between strength and delicacy. The contrast between the peacefulness of the moment and the rough changes that nature brings in the way of seasonal variation, erosion and storm gives me endless material for painting and meditation. We are such a part of nature and it of us that we need to really listen to what it says to us. Will Durant has said the “civilization lives by geological consent…” and it is so true.
