We are delighted to present a new exhibit of Tenants Harbor artist Phoebe Bly’s latest work.  The show opens on Friday, August 5th, 2011 and runs through August 27. All are invited to the  gala Artist’s Reception, to be held at the Gallery on August 5, from 5 – 8, with refreshments and live jazz by Steve Lindsay and friends.s

Phoebe Bly has shown annually in the Midcoast area for the past six years, acquiring a devoted and enthusiastic following.  “I started oil painting eleven years ago, in desperation…I started out as a photographer, then moved to Islesboro and lost my darkroom.  I’m basically self-taught, though I’ve been inspired by several painters.”  Phoebe says that her parents were “back to the land” hippies in the 70s.  The family lived in a tiny hand-built cabin in the woods without running water or electricity.  “Although I felt freakish among my peers at the time, living and playing in the woods gave me a huge respect and love for nature.  It’s been a never-ending source of inspiration for my painting.”  In discussing her work in the new show, Phoebe says, “I feel like I’m still exploring similar themes – nature and the interplay of civilization with the natural world. Most of my paintings have some human element.  It’s hard to avoid in the world we live in.”

The show presents thirty-four works in oil, including several of the night scenes for which the artist is especially known, large paintings of single bird feathers, a blazing bonfire, frosty winter scenes, gas tanks and tractors tucked into verdant landscapes, and lots of roads.  Swirling expressionistic shapes, photographic darks and diffused light define work that combines mystery with joyousness and a touch of sly humor.
