Joseph Adolphe lives and paints in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife and seven children. Born in Calgary, Canada, he moved to New York City in 1992 to attend graduate school at the School of Visual Arts. His paintings are in numerous corporate collections, but mostly in the homes of some very good people. Last year Joseph won first place in the 2010 Figure Now competition held in St. Louis.
“ “My goal in painting is to paint not the created thing, but the forces that shape the created thing. As a result of this thinking, when I paint my daughters running on the beach I focus my energy on capturing the adjectives of the moment rather than a frozen-in-time picture. I’m drawn to the flashes of color and energy that exude from figures in motion. This attraction has forced me to readdress the relationship between the real and the abstract. I feel that if I can capture some of the energy and color associated with the action of the figure, then I have captured something truer than if I were to simply paint a figure in the classical tradition, frozen in space and time, still.”
