Tillman Crane

crane Tillman Crane is a photographer of the old school. His luminescent platinum prints are arresting: they make one stop and see how beautiful black and white and all the intermediate gradations of grey can be. Odin Stone is the third of his photographic series to be printed as a book. The photographs are set in Orkney, an archipelago of nearly seventy islands off the northeast coast of Scotland. Tillman was first drawn there by the 5000-year-old standing stones of Stenness and of Brodgar. His fascination soon expanded to include Norse remains, the medieval cathedral, and the present-day towns, farms, and people of the islands. These photographs attend to the muted glory of the commonplace as well as the rare; to glowing whites against a dark hillside, a cloudy North Sea sky.
